Wildlife & nature

The land we share

Roughly half of Latvia is covered by forest. Its pine, spruce and birch woodlands are home to a rich community of animals and plants.
§ 1

Latvian woodland

Mixed forests, bogs, river valleys and farmland edges create varied habitats. Species commonly associated with Latvian landscapes include roe deer, red deer, elk, wild boar, beaver, fox, lynx and wolf — the animal that gives our association its name.

§ 2

Respecting habitats

Healthy wildlife populations depend on healthy habitats. We encourage members to stay on established tracks where possible, to avoid disturbance during breeding seasons, and to report anything unusual — injured animals, illegal dumping or signs of disease — to the relevant authorities.

§ 3

Wildlife management

In Latvia, hunting is regulated as part of wildlife management, with seasons, limits and permits set by the State. Responsible hunters follow these rules and support the long-term balance between wildlife, forestry and agriculture.

§ 4

Leave no trace

Take home everything you bring. Use existing fire sites, keep fires small and supervised, and put them out completely. Respect private land and the people who live and work there.
